Kildare Leagues 1 Galway League 2
A depleted Galway side advanced to the Semi finals of the youth Interleague with a deserved victory in Kildare on Saturday.
Galway settled the quicker and Richard Fahy tested home keeper Darragh Horgan after just two minutes. Kildare however settled into the game soon after that let off and Jamie Rodgers set up Dylan Fitzpatrick whose well struck effort from just outside the box was tipped over by Galway custodial Seamus Curry.
Galway took a deserved lead after twenty-three minutes. A terrific header in the middle of the park from Cathal O’Regan played in Richard Fahy who in turn released Brian Duhan who fired a low shot across keeper Horgan and into the far corner of the net. Galway maintained their lead til halftime.
Kildare needed to make a good start to the second half to get back into the contest but it was the Westerners that got off to a flyer, when the impressive Cathal O’Regan gave a sublime pass to Richard Fahy who took on the Kildare defence and got through to finish well after just three minutes of the 2nd half.
Kildare rang the changes after fifty-three minutes, bringing on Jake O'Reilly and Kieran Naughton and the home side now pushed forward in an effort to save the game but could not penitrate the Galway back four of Eric Neary, Daniel Lenihan, Caolan Malone and Evan Browne who managed to deal capably with the home side's best efforts.
Kildare finally got reward for their efforts in the 87th. minute with a goal from Kieran Naughton, whose shot from just outside the box gave Galway keeper Curry no chance.
Despite further late pressure from Kildare, It was the Galway lads that came closest to adding to their lead in the 93rd min when Kildare somehow managed to clear a goalmouth scramble with Brian O’Connell and Eric Gannon coming close.
Brian Laffey’s & Padraig Fadden’s Galway side now go on
