Mervue Utd U16's Secure League and Cup Double
- May 28,2012
Mervue Utd's Under 16 team completed a league and cup double as they captured the Premier Cup at Eamonn Deacy Park on Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Corofin Utd.
A first half cracking free-kick from captain Ryan Manning just past the half hour mark had the league winners 1-0 in front at the break. Manning had been fouled himself and he picked himself up before curling an excellent effort over the Corofin wall and into the roof of the net.
They doubled that lead on 66 minutes when Andrew Connolly picked out his strike partner Padraic Cunningham at the back post as he headed home for 2-0. Cunningham almost doubled his tally five minutes later but his well struck effort came back of the underside of the crossbar.
Ollie Neary and Paul Moynihan's side did add a third on 76 minutes when an excellent through ball from sub Mikey Fox picked out Andrew Connolly's run and the centre forward emphatically fired his effort past the Corofin keeper for 3-0.
The crossbar denied Mervue a fourth goal after Ryan Manning's late strike cannoned back off the woodwork with the keeper beaten again.
After the game the Galway FA's Pat McGann presented Mervue captain Ryan Manning with the Premier Cup as they completed a great league and cup double.
