Galway U18 side defeat AUL

The Galway U18 side advanced to the semi-finals of Inter League competition by defeating AUL 4-1 last Saturday in Eamon Deacy Park.

Both sides started the game brightly, with each having a number of chances in the opening quarter.

Padraic Cunningham led the line for Galway alongside Conor Barry and the two were a thorn in the AUL's side all day long. They created their first chance with good link up with Cunningham shooting from the edge of the box which the keeper saved.

AUL's first chance came on the 15th minute when the right winger cut in from then right and is shot was brilliantly cleared of the line by Paul Healy.

Although AUL looked dangerous going forward, it was Galway that broke the deadlock after a certain amount of pressure in the AUL's half. Eoin Walsh crossed from the left wing with Cunningham on the end of it to grab his third goal of the campaign.

10 minutes later Galway added to their lead. After good inter play down the left between Walsh and Diarmuid Fadden, it was Fadden that crossed the ball in Cunningham finished under pressure to grab his second goal of the game.

Galway got their third in the 38th minute. After hard work in the middle of the park by Richard Fahy, the ball was released to Barry. He then went on a mazy run going past two defenders and beating the keeper at the near post.

Cunningham got his hat-trick in the final minutes of the first half. After a long ball by Galway's keeper Peter Healy, the ball was flicked on by Barry and it was Cunningham on the end of it to smash the ball past the helpless keeper to kill of the game.

Healy made a good save with the last attack of the first half getting down well at his near post to push the ball away for a corner.

In the second half oppertunities became seldom as both defences tightened up.

On the 75th minute, AUL were reduced to 10 men when their keeper was sent off for a last man challenge on Aaron McDonagh.

AUL got a consolation towards the end when their winger scored directly from a corner but it wasn't to put down a Galway side that thoroughly deserved their victory.

They will now go forward to play either the Inishowen or Wexford League in Eamon Deacy Park. Date and time to be confirmed
