FAI Youth Semi Final v Wexford Youths

  • Mar 30,2013

The Galway FA U18 side have drawn a home semi final in the FAI Youth Inter League competition which will see them pitted against a Wexford side well equipped to be part of this stage of the competition.

Victories against Clare and Mayo in the group stages set the Galway side up against the AUL, who were also undefeated in their campaign coming into that tie. This game was played in the first week of March and resulted in a Galway win.

In what was an evenly balanced game for the first twenty five minutes, Galway  went ahead through a Padraic Cunningham strike. Subsequent to that came a rampant five minute spell before the break which added another three goals, with Cunningham notching a hat-trick and Conor Barry also hitting the target with a superb solo effort.

This left the Galway lads in a comfortable position at the break and the second half never lived up to the excitement of the first period. In the dying minutes of the game the AUL side did manage to pull one back which made it 4-1, where it finished.

Galway now go in to their home semi-final tie with Wexford with both the confidence in their own ability and also with caution and respect for a Wexford side that are not unfamiliar with reaching the later stages of this competition.

On route to the semi Final, goals have been aplenty for this Galway side, with both Cunningham and Manning scoring hat-tricks along the way. The availability of current Irish Schools internationals Alex Byrne and Conor Barry  has also been an essential ingredient added  to this successful mix on this journey.

With an extended panel of twenty four to pick from for this tie, Galway manager Brian Laffey will be hopeful that all will be available and injury free come match day, Sunday April 7th. Galway look forward to the opportunity of going one step further than last year’s semi-final defeat to DDSL. The game kicks off at 12 noon in Eamon Deacy Park, Terryland and all support would be very welcome and appreciated.
