Defence Forces women meet RAF in Galway tomorrow

The Irish Defence Forces Women’s team will play the RAF in an international friendly match at Eamon Deacy Park, Galway, tomorrow, Thursday, at 12noon.  The attendance will include Major General Ralph James, Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), and Paddy McCaul, President of the FAI.

The Irish squad includes several players who play in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League like goalkeeper Linda McNamara of Cork Women’s FC and Sinead Forde of Galway Women’s FC.  Emma Hannon and Kim Turner were members of the Kilcullen side which recently beat Corrib Rangers in the FAI Umbro Women’s Junior Cup Final.

Manager Darren Cody had almost a full squad to pick from having been boosted by the return of Amy Phelan from her tour of duty in Lebanon and he is confident that goalkeeper McNamara will fit to play after recovering from a recent injury.

“Training has gone well and our coach Alan Corboy has done a great job with the players. We are looking forward to the challenge that the RAF will present and I’m confident, that with the work we have done to date with the players, that we can produce a good team performance on the day,” said Cody.

This is the first time that the Irish Defence Forces women’s team have played the RAF. The men’s team, on the other hand, have played them three times, drawing twice and winning once.
